What’s a Mystic Cross?

I came up in a school of palmistry that didn’t talk about the Mystic Cross at all.  Still, it’s hard to study hands and read as much about palmistry and hand analysis as I do and not come across references to this mystical marker.

The more I read about it and the more I looked at my own hands I realized that I do have one of these!  In fact, I’ve had it for as long as I’ve been studying hands.

During my certification process we identified it as a marker of change and upheaval in my life occurring in or or around my 41st year.  (talking about time lines in hands is another BOOK, much less post, so I won’t get into it right now.)

The above identification made sense.  In my 41st year my entire life changed – dramatically.  I knew it was coming and it was underway when we made the identification during my certification process.  The culmination came later that year, but since I don’t believe in coincidences, I assumed that a cross between a head and heart line, with it’s center point directly below the Saturn (middle) finger would always indicate some sort of massive life change.

(If you’ve been reading for a while, you know that I believe that change is inevitable – neither good or bad – so you might as well lean into it.)

Massive life change isn’t the easiest sort of change to lean into, but boy was it worth it. (hindsight, you know).

Fast forward a few (cough SIX cough) years and suddenly I’m getting more and more questions from curious readers about a Mystic Cross.  I wrote the questions off and responded from my belief that this cross more accurately reflected a life-change around the early 40s.  (me?! a non-predictive palmist – predicting change at a certain date? I’m still embarrassed!)

But I couldn’t really shake this Mystic Cross mystery so I went back through my library of palmistry tomes and started really digging into the meaning of a Mystic Cross.  Most books (and websites you’ll find) simply state it’s an indicator of psychic ability, which is probably why I wrote it off at first – I feel strongly that EVERYONE has psychic ability.

Then I started to meditate on that – what if a Mystic Cross is a type of gift marking?  What if a Mystic Cross appeared on your hand to remind you that you got an extra dose of this intuitive/psychic/mystical/alchemical gift in order to go deeply into your purpose and service in the world?  What if it showed up when you were NOT using it to it’s fullest advantage and you had a penalty to work through? (oy)

Ahhh, that made sense.

And this new understanding worked in alignment with the life change thing too.  While the massive life change I  made was not overtly related to stepping into this work – the timing was ‘coincidental’.

Having a Mystic Cross all these years I’m now (FINALLY) rethinking how I am in the world.

The Mystic Cross is in the center of the red circle (c) 2012 Peggie Arvidson

I’ve never been one of those believers with a big B.  I’m not a person who goes to a psychic already enamored of the wisdom they’ll bestow on me.  I’m intrigued by things mystical and other-wordly, but I face them all with a skeptic’s eye and a strong need for authentication.  Frankly, I’m the Doubting Thomas of the Psychic World.

Still.  I can’t shake the idea that a Mystic Cross shows up to push us into accepting and using in a BIG way our intuitive gifts.  It shows up to require us to explore not only what is seen, but what is unseen, and to face the fear of mockery and ostracism that can come along with that particular type of pursuit of answers.

A Mystic Cross to me means more than simply dabbling in the magical arts for giggles and entertainment, it means stepping deeply into the quest for spiritual truth and answers.  Finding those answers and making peace with the spiritual, natural and material world is the gift of the Mystic Cross.

Now that I’m coming to terms with it, I’m eager to embrace it (and stop fighting against it) and see how it can help amplify my service in the world.

Do you have a Mystic Cross?  What’s been your experience?

Don’t Confuse a Bitter Pill with a Life Sentence: or Some Palm readers really P*ss me Off

Sometimes I get so ticked off at other palmists.  Not the ones I know personally, but those other people out there, touting themselves as healers and palm readers who are acting in simply shameful ways.

Last night I met a colleague for the first time in person.  I’d always felt that she was a little chill toward me — and I couldn’t figure out why.  I wrote it off as my own inferiority complex and fears of rejection and the fact that the majority of our interactions happen on line in various social media venues.

When we met she was gracious and delightful and her eyes were full of light and dancing.  She had insightful questions about using hands to help real people in the real world.

Then she pointed to my hand

specifically to that little fork toward the bottom of my life line – where it wraps around the Mount of Venus (that cushy spot below your thumb) and asked, with urgency, “What does that mean?!”

She showed me that she had one too.

I told her that I liken it to a reminder of an event that happened in our earliest years that is in direct alignment with our “stuff” (what I also refer to as Life Lesson or Massive Growth Opportunities).  Sometimes I’ll refer to it as a bitter pill.  You know, when you get an aspirin stuck in your throat?  That feeling and taste sticks with you and that’s what this mark is all about.  Something that sticks with you.

My colleague asked, “so this isn’t going away?”

“It’s possible, but not likely.”

“Does it go away when you completely deal with whatever it is in the past?”

“Possible, but as much as I’d like to think that I completely heal and learn all facets of my primal wound and lesson, I suspect it’s a lifelong process.  So it will probably be here for the long haul.”

She seemed relieved.

Then she showed me that she had the same thing on HER dominant hand.

We chatted a bit about childhood and healing and epiphanies and then she told me,

“I had my hands read a long time ago and the palmist told me that this was sign of a life altering illness and I’ve been carrying that around ever since.”

While she didn’t say exactly how long ago that was, I suspect it’s been more than a decade.

This is what gets me about these so-called palm readers.  Making bold statements like that can alter the life of someone.  And not in a good way. It’s just not cool.

My entire way of being in the world is based on the belief that every single person on the planet has free will.  So how could I predict whether or not someone might or might not face a debilitating illness?

Surely, a bitter pill in the hand can lead to challenges (physical or otherwise)  if the pill is not faced and dealt with.  Life is full of opportunities to face challenges and trauma and come out stronger and more well than when you started.  On the flip side, if you’ve got a childhood trauma that you’re repressing or are not willing to face – it’s eventually going to catch up with you.  Your choice though what you do with it.

The bottom line is this – palmistry is an amazing tool for gaining clarity, working through the tough stuff and creating a map for the best version of our lives.  It’s NOT a game, nor a fortune-telling device where your future is set in stone.

Everything in your hands can change – depending on the choices you make.

If you’ve ever had a palmistry reading with someone who scared the beejesus out of you – tell me about it in the comments – I’ll help you figure out what’s really going on in your hand, okay?

Myths about Palmistry : What’s REALLY in it for you

I had my hands read in 2004 at the urging of my marketing coach.  At the time, I had a successful business and all the trappings of a lovely life.  Still, I felt like something was missing.  My coach, wise woman that she is, urged me to learn my life purpose and more in a palmistry session.

As soon as I got off the phone with my coach I called the palm reader who lived across the country and asked about having a session.  We made the arrangements and I waited with anticipation for the ink kit to arrive.  I sweated the idea that I might make my prints incorrectly, and I sent the reader about a dozen versions of my left and right hand print.

I mailed off the stack of hand prints and paperwork and waited, anxiously, for her to call and schedule our appointment.

You see, I hadn’t been fully honest with myself (or my coach for that matter).  My marriage was in trouble and I knew it.  I think he knew it, but I can’t be sure.  I was miserably living out a limiting belief – that you can’t be successful in business and love.  Where I cultivated that belief is still a mystery.

When the time came for my reading I thought that she’d predict my future and give me a list of proclamations on how to live a purpose-filled life.

Boy was I wrong.

The reading was enlightening.  It was confusing.  It was emotionally engaging.  The reading was not a magic pill or elixir that would magically fix everything that was wrong in my life.  I left the call wanting more – I wanted to know how to apply this knowledge to the life I already had.  I wanted guidance for making shifts and changes.  I just didn’t know where to get it.

The reading started me on a long adventure – one that, hopefully, won’t end anytime soon.  It sent me looking inside for my true answers and pushed me beyond my comfort zone to find out why I was settling in some very important places in my life.

This is the point I make with all my clients – a reading isn’t the end of your quest.  A hand analysis is actually the beginning of a journey to bring you back in alignment with your purpose.  It’s not meant to stand alone.  It shouldn’t get buried in the back of your overworked mind.  It’s meant to be a useful, living tool to move forward.

This is why I’m changing the way I work.

People used to come to me and expect that after a hand analysis session they’d have complete and utter clarity and everything in their life would change for the better.  They thought (as I did when I had my first reading) that they’d suddenly be able to make the hard choices in their life and that they’d be in the flow with the Universe.

That’s just not the way it works.

There’s so much to be covered in a reading of your hands – we could talk for a weekend or more just about a particular set of your finger or the way your heart line winds and breaks on your left hand but is strong and steady on your right.

Your hands are the starting point and the guide for you clearing out cobwebs and refocusing on your values – your purpose and your passions.  It’s a one-size-fits-only you map for living bigger and making your hidden dreams come true.

It’s not a way to predict your future or even decide “should I stay or should I go” (Believe me, back in 2004 I wished it was!)

Here’s some of what you can expect from a reading:

  • You can know yourself better – with a deeper understanding of your motivators, values and even your excuses (with knowledge comes power)
  • Learn more about where “you’re coming from” in a spiritual way – why are you drawn to certain activities and not others?  How come you keep dealing with the same pitfalls over and over again?
  • Gain insight into breaking outdated patterns and beliefs.  Your beliefs and habits have been formed throughout your life.  Usually they came about because of a “good” reason – to keep you safe in some way, shape or form.  Now they maybe holding you back.  Perhaps they’re not useful.  Your hands help us see what these habits are and give you clues to creating new patterns for growth and wholeness.
  • Understand where you’re going.  Your hands cannot predict your future – after all, you have complete free will.  Still, they can help us make an enlightened assumption about where you’ll end up if you continue on the path you’re on.

Your hands help you shine light on what’s been hiding.  They help you figure out where you really want to go and most importantly they give you specific sign posts for getting there.

None of this happens in an hour or overnight.

It comes with a commitment to do the inner work and outer work necessary to align your entire life with your purpose.

That’s why I’m phasing out stand-alone readings.  Sure, they’re a lucrative part of my business – so this decision scares me from a financial point of view.

I know from personal experience that the greatest alignment with purpose comes with on-going commitment to growth. As a result, I work best with peeps who are in it for the long-haul.  Working one-to-one with a handful of my perfect people, and watching them make shifts and changes – sometimes almost imperceptible changes – is amazing and fulfilling work.

What that means is that come December, readings will be available only in conjunction with deeper life purpose work – where we spend 3 months, together altering the habits and beliefs that you think are ingrained to get to the heart of you and your purpose.

If you’re on board with committing to positive change in your life, be sure to sign up for the weekly ‘zine (up there in the right hand corner) – where you’ll get specific tips and insights on moving forward on purpose, as well as early bird announcements about these upcoming changes and opportunities to work directly with me to use your hands as your life purpose guidance system.

Focus on Finances with Claire Tompkins

Happy Thursday!

Today’s volunteer is Claire Tompkins The Clutter Coach.

Question: Why haven’t I achieved the kind of financial success I want? I have great friends and family, and a full life with creativity, physical health, emotional support, fun, spiritual peace; all that good stuff. [Well, I would like to find a sweetie too.] But money doing something I love (which I am doing) has eluded me so far. I’ve been feeling like I’m on the right track for a long time now, years, so sometimes I doubt myself. Maybe I’m standing in my own way, but I’m not clear how. I feel frustrated about this.

Answer: Claire, thanks so much for being honest in your question and in your note to me.  Often it’s so hard to own our truth that we avoid it – which never leads to anything useful!  Step one is knowing what you don’t want.  Step 2 – what specifically do you want?  Step 3 – Why do you want it?

Let’s look at your right hand first.  You’ve identified yourself as a righty who does her best to include her left hand in activities.   We’ll use your right hand as representative as you in the world.

Claire's right hand

Your hand is stretched pretty thin. There are many lines, mostly running vertically – along the fingers and across major lines in the palm – this indicates that you feel stretched thin – at least a good portion of the time.

You may be moving, moving, moving simply for the sake of doing and saying you’re DOING.  This also allows us to hide out a bit from what’s really underneath all that whirly energy –the core of you.

Your Saturn line (marked in light blue) is fairly straight but it starts nearly in the middle of the hand , which indicates that you like to make sure you have all your ducks in a row before starting. (Read more about Saturn lines here). This could be starting any individual project, a business, a relationship, etc.  There is a line connecting your Saturn to your life line (I’ve marked that connector in light blue as well) which shows that you are carrying some influence from your family about your work – how you earn money.  This is neither good or bad, but it’s an observation to spend time with.

What does financial success mean to you?  What does it mean to the members of your family?  Where are they the same and where are they different?  How does that influence you in your work?

The fact that Saturn stops at your heart line means that you can be ready to drop a project, job, client, etc. if you feel that you’re heart is not in “it.”  You may be apt to take the little headaches and heartaches in running your own business as “signs” that you shouldn’t be doing the work you’re doing.  Now I know you love what you do, but I wonder, what are you forcing yourself to do that you’re heart doesn’t embrace?  It sounds almost counter-intuitive to say this – but I will anyway – outsource the work that sucks your heart dry.  You’ll make more money when you’re free to focus on your gifts.

The line that I’ve marked in Green on your right hand is your line of Clairvoyance.  It’s quite lovely and nearly “textbook”!  A Line of Clairvoyance (and not coincidentally I see these often on people named Clair!) is a gift marking.  Gift markings show up to remind us to use our gifts in a bigger way in our every day life.  In other words, while you’re likely aware of your gift, you’re not using it – addressing the messages you receive and applying the inner knowing in a way that serves you and those around you in a regular, daily way.

Perhaps you can focus on working with healers, psychics, intuitive, etc?  That may be a good use of this line.

When you’re not using your line of clairvoyance regularly you’ll suffer the consequences – feeling stagnant, isolated and even sometimes alienated.

The gift of the line of clairvoyance is “understanding the rules of the Universe – a meanings expert.” (Read more about the Line of Clairvoyance).

I encourage you to dig deeper, using this gift, to speak to your perfect peeps with your work. Again, it seems counter-intuitive to “target” some people and “leave out” the rest, but that’s not what I’m saying here.

There are some people that are your perfect fit – find them and help them.

The key here is this – you have your own healing work to do – (we all do) and the people you’re meant to help are those that need healing around the same things.

Claire's Left hand

Your left hand, representing the “inner Claire” is slightly less stretched – perhaps on the inside you know how to relax a bit more?

Your Saturn line on your left hand starts on the outer edge of your palm – low and below the Mercury (pinky) finger.  What it means is this – when you follow your gut/intuition/Guidance – you are in the flow. When you’re in the flow with your projects things are easy and as a result financial success is more likely.  However, Saturn insists that you are clear on what financial success is – on your own terms.

It’s also important for you to heal any negative beliefs you have around money – for instance, if Money were a person (a potential Sweetie, let’s say) what type of person would Money be for you?  It’s a worthwhile exercise for you to write down the attributes of this Money person.  Then ask yourself if you’d spend time with him?

Finally, I’ve marked a line on both of your thumbs in red. This line runs horizontally across the upper zone of your thumb.  This upper zone represents a number of things, among them your “can-do” spirit, and your ambition and your vision of things you want to accomplish in the material world.  It also represents the Crown Chakra – representing your connection to the Divine.

This horizontal line indicates that you’re cutting off (or making it harder than it needs to be) your “can do” spirit, your vision of what you want as well as your otherwise easy connection to the Divine.

Bringing us full circle to the question posed in Step 2 – What specifically do you want? (in this case in terms of money – is $30,000/year the goal or $160,000? or something else all together?)

To sum up:

Your hands indicate that you work VERY HARD DOING.  This is neither good or bad.  You simply want to ensure that what you’re doing is in alignment with what you want to BE.  Your hands also indicate a potential  for narrowing your niche from “everyone/all women with clutter” to something more specific and in alignment with your sensibilities.

You have an innate sense of intuition/clairvoyance/connection to the Divine and finding ways to bring that more fully into your work will suit you and your clients. This will also allow you to focus on what is RIGHT pay for RIGHT work.  Both parts of that equation are required to feel fulfilled financially and in your life.

Claire, I see so much power in your hands – the capacity to do things in a new and innovative way that will pave the way for others to do their best work.  Thank you for sharing your hands with us this week!

Friends, feel free to leave questions or make comments below.  Additionally, if you’d like to submit your hands for this weekly showcase, please follow the instructions here and here.
