How To Build Your List Even If You Don’t Have an Opt-In Gift

You’ll notice that I currently don’t offer you an opt-in to read my posts or sign up for my newsletter. (This is a good time to thank you for signing up and reading!)

Yet I’ve increased my subscribers in less than a month by about 8%.

How did I do it?

A bit of background and a strong opinion:

I watch trends. I’m obsessive about it and I have been since I was a little girl watching Sesame Street and the Lone Ranger on one of the 4 channels we got on  our suburban New Jersey TV set.  I’m curious as hell about the things people do and why they do it, and I’m particularly smitten with the shenanigans of Madison Avenue and how they always seemed to  know exactly what I wanted so I could show my Mom and Dad and make sure they knew exactly which Schwinn Bicycle to get me. (the one with the banana seat!)

In 2016, you can watch trends in real time. Turn on whatever mobile device you’ve got and you’ll see what a massive amount of your peers are doing, thinking, buying and longing for. Whether it’s real, or manipulated, it’s right in front of you. Isn’t that fantastic?!

What’s all this trend-watching got to do with opt-ins?

It’s my little secret.

When trends become rallying cries from the lips of self-proclaimed experts and marketing gurus, I run the other way. (feel free to TWEET this!)

By the time everyone and their cousin is coaching you on how to do something to build your business, the odds are it’s being over done. By this time, the second or third tier of gurus are teaching you watered down techniques and regurgitated rules that, due to the speed of the internet, are no longer valid. (It’s sort of a modern day version of that old shampoo commercial “You tell two friends, and they tell two friends.” Except the friends doing the telling are people creating a knock-off version of their coach’s system using their templates altered to their brand.)  By the way, this DRIVES ME CRAZY.

Of course not EVERYONE does this, but enough do that it’s a thing that someone ought to point it out.

Does this mean you have to be a trend-watcher to have a thriving business?


It means you need to tap into your inner GPS.

Pay attention to what feels like a good fit  and makes sense for you and what you do.

Does having an opt-in gift feel really right and unique to you? Go ahead and create one.

But for love of Cheiro do NOT throw together some half-baked enchilada and call it an opt-in gift just so that you can say you have one. (go ahead and Tweet that too!)

An effective  opt-in gift is something that is permeated with the essence and light of YOU. It stands alone as your representative, so that even if somehow your name and contact information get removed, anyone who even vaguely knows you and your work would recognize it as a gift from YOU and your business.

By the way, that type of opt-in is not something you can throw together in a few hours by following a template and call it done. If you want to look like everyone else out there, then go ahead and follow the template and put your own colors and logo, or catch phrases on it. If you want to build a posse of people who not only love how you read hands but are your personal entourage, touting your brand of awesome far and wide, then you’ll need to deliver content, gifts, products and service that take time and one of a kind vision.

I’m working on something like that for you. Until it’s ready there’s no “filler” gift just because someone says I should have one.

Back to what I’ve done in less than a month to increase subscribers (including you?!) to my kick-ass PalmNation mailing list:

  1. Super Duper Clarity on my goal.  This required some serious tough-love talks with myself. No more thinking, “It would be cool to increase my following.” I got solidly behind my current numbers and WHY I’d like to grow them. I took ownership of the fact that I’d been trying to be everything to everybody and while I really do like the idea of living in Kumbaya land where everyone can find balance and peace and their own inner truth, that just wasn’t what I wanted to focus my business on. I knew I wanted to help Palmists and others like them get off their duffs, step out of the shadows and make some real honest-to-goodness cash while doing their magic in the world. That’s not a huge niche. So what. I don’t need everyone on my list, but I do want more of the right for me people on my list. Thus, clarity. My goal was to increase my subscribers by 10%  within 30 days. Knowing what I wanted made it easy to focus on results.
  2. Deliver great content. I’m a writer. I have been a writer since I learned how to form letters in kindergarten and wrote my first story. It’s my great love and I can’t believe it took me so long to own that I’m a good writer. (An aside – although writing is my true passion, I don’t consider it to be my purpose. It’s one of the ways I let my purpose show up through me.)  I have my own voice and my own way of sharing information. Plus I love clarity and step-by-step, take it and run information. My focus zeroed in on delivering amazing content to you every time I show up. I’ve upped my production output and increased my visibility simply by writing strong content, sharing my specific point of view using my own voice.
  3. Sought out great guidance. I went looking, and found, amazing guidance. I found useful tips and specific how-tos in a number of places, mostly out of the mouths (or keyboards) of bloggers and coaches 20 (or more) years younger than I am.  (Never think that you’re too old to learn something new.) Some of my current favorites (I’m always finding new inspiration) include: ByRegina, who consistently over-delivers and provides super tutorials that you can apply to your business; Mariah Coz at Femtrepreneur; and Elizabeth Fein at  In case you’re wondering, none of those links are affiliate links. I’m not against affiliate links but I just haven’t had enough interaction with these folks to warrant a look into that, yet.
  4. Implemented What I’ve Learned. Which includes upping my presence on the social media platforms I’d already been using – like Instagram , Facebook and Pinterest — all with an eye toward building relationships with people who are interested in the kinds of things I do. I participate in the groups I’m in by adding value and asking questions and I’ve had the great pleasure of making new friends simply by showing up as me. I’ve got a ton more to learn, but in a very short amount of time I’m seeing a positive upswing in my original goal of adding more of you to my band of merry troubadours on my PalmNation list.

As I go forward I will continue to take consistent action and produce content that is useful and entertaining for you. And as I learn, I will always share with you. If that sounds like something you want in on, go ahead and sign up to receive  PalmNation today!
